Not to sound like I'm singing the same note....:D :D :D :D but you might try
taking a peek at the Mudcat Cafe's Digital Tradition
(http://www.mudcat.org/folksearch.html) Not only do they have a wide
database of folk-song lyrics...if you pull up a specific song, if you're
lucky, you will also occasionally find someone's essay or program notes on the
song alongside it.
Since you mention Bob Dylan, let me cite a splendiferous example of what I
mean. :) :) :) Yesterday, I was just looking into the program notes at
Mudcat, written on Don MacLean's anthem for the lost 60's generation,
"American Pie." Now, MacLean himself is a good example of a 20th century
balladeer; his songs are usually stories, and his poetic lyrics are always
richly layered with meaning. "Pie" is probably the best example of this.
But I also mention it, because the lyrics contain NUMEROUS references to
Dylan, and other relevant performers of the 60's. (The "jester" who sang for
the king and queen, borrowed James Dean's jacket and stole Elvis' crown of
thorns? These are some pretty overt Dylan references, to anyone who knows
their rock history. :) :) :)
Anyway....happy hunting!
