minstrel: Acappella barony

I am wondering if there are any suggestions out there as to what sorts of
instruments would be good to learn in a barony without any (current)
instrumentation beyond voices. Being in the far north, we like to hold
bardics because it brings us together but keeps us out of the -40/-60
degree weather that Winter's Gate often gets in the winter, but a simple
stringed instrument, or maybe even a drum. I know that the 'bodrahn'
(sp?) is very similar to the native Athabaskan and Tlingit drums in
several ways, but played differently, so that might be one option. Other
suggestions?
