Let folks bring their doumbecks to the fire!  I've always thought that a
doumbeck makes a pretty good knife stand.  They're deep enough to hold even
a short sword, and the new tyvek heads don't tear nearly as badly as
goatskin.  If you're careful when reinserting the blade, one head should
last several years.   

You can tell your story is too long when the knives come out of the
doumbecks.  It's REALLY too long when they ask for tape to patch the
drumheads...
