Correction: "bard" (in a variety of surface forms) was used generally in
the various _Celtic_ cultures, not only the Gaelic-speaking ones. The
earliest form of the word recorded is in reference to Continental Celtic
cultures (loosely "Gauls" although this is not necessarily precisely
accurate). It's most likely that the word passed into English from Welsh,
in fact, not from Gaelic.
