Better late than never....
You may consider consulting any book of traditional ballads, many of which
have spooky qualitite, and can be documented in period.
The Unquite Grave is one piece I do, it's one of the Child ballads, I found
it in a collage english book, and since I did not have music for it I wrote
my own. I actually encourage people to do this, it is after all period.
The Unquite Grave
Whe wind doth blow today my love
And a few small drops of rain
I never had but one true love
In a cold grave she was lain
I'll do as much for my true love
As any young man may
I'll sit and morn all at her grave
For a twelve month and a day
The twelve month and a day being up
The dead began to speak
Saying Who sit's weeping on my grave
And will not let me sleep?
'Tis I my love sits on your grave
And will not let you sleep
For I crave one kiss of you clay cold lips
And that is all I seek
You crave one kiss of my clay cold lips
But my breath smells earthly strong
If you have one kiss of my clay cold lips
Your time will not be long
'Tis down in yonder garden green
Love where we used to walk
The finest flower that 'er was seen
Has withered to a stalk
The stalk has withered dry my love
So will our hearts decay
So make youself content my love
'Till God calls you away
I'm sure that some of you have seen differents versions, as have I. The
intresting this is that I did this song for a bardic contest at Potereo
several years ago. I won that contest, and my prize was an Oxford Bood of
Ballads, which contains...you guess it The Unquite Grave.......
