minstrel: Bodrhans in Price range

Michael,

I bought one in September from Axen Drums for $65. it has a very nice
tone and it's solidly built (hardwood rim and crosspieces, brass tacks
every 1 inch plus glue, nicely rounded corners). It doesn't have any
fancy celtic designs on it (those were $20 more).

If you go to the bodhran Web page:
http://www.panix.com/~mittle/bodhran.html you can find lots of tips for
buying a bodhran. (I'd be glad to e-mail you the text if you can't access
it.) They also have a list of mail-order retailers on that site.

Axen drums has a Web page: http://www.artsnet.com/artists/axen/index.html
but they don't really advertise they're bedhrans on it. Their address is:
AXEN
7924 Arlington Dr.
Omaha, NE 68134
(402)572-8939
email: axen at artsnet.com or MAxen at aol.com

As an aside, I was told by someone whose bodhran playing I admire, that
having an adjustable-head bodhran doesn't make a significant difference
(relative to the significantly higher cost) unless you are doing a lot of
studio work where you want to tune the drum to a specific pitch. Also, if
you anticipate playing in very humid or very dry atmospheres, where it
would be hard to keep a good sound, a plastic head is an alternative to
skin.

Now... if I could just keep a decent beat. :)
