Psaltery, both bowed and plucked, are definitely within the scope of the
standard SCA timeframe ("period").
HE Robin of Gilwell (OP,WSA,Lion of Ansteorra, etc.), within the SCA a
somewhat reknowned poet / rhetorician & man of more talents than I can ever
hope to keep up with, has been known to occasionally play a bowed psaltery
tuned to non-"Western" scales. The aural effect was similar to some of the
Chinese stringed instruments I have heard.
(Please accept my apologies for forgetting the exact terminology. At least
part of the reference was "non-diatonic"? I'm more of a practical than
theoretical musician with very limited instrumental ability or training, and
the formal terms sometimes escape my cognizance).
