Rathflaed listed some of the available "learning" tapes; I'll add some
useful collections at the end. My additions are not necessarily basic
learning material, but contain performances worth considering.
> - Lady Julitta's Learning tapes #1-10 (there are 10 sides, not 10 tapes)
> (Atlantia)
> - The recently mentioned Bardic 101 by Katerina Aretino. (Ansteorra)
> - Lady Shaughnessy's Basic Bardic and Bawdy Bardic. (An Tir)
> - My own "The Black Bard Sings" and "The Black Bard Unplugged" (Meridies)
> -The Caidian Bardic Tapes (1-5) (Caid)
> Any others out there?
[Caveat: I am relatively non-critical in suggesting any of the following.
They reflect my personal style and knowledge more than any indication of
what is truly available. As I have probably demonstrated by example thus
far, I accept the concept of "compatible filk" and the need for fun stuff
that is neither documentible or strictly adhering to specific medieval /
Renn. style. I'd like to work in more authentic tunes, and will be seeking
some of the above learning tapes in hopes of finding same.]
Marjorie du Brae (sp?) in Elfsea, Ansteorra has / had a compilation of
learning materials including one or more tapes available for reproduction.
The Cynagua Bardic Guild has "The Cynagua Sampler" and "Return of the
Cynagua Sampler". The first I have not heard, and understand is available
only catch-as-can via personal copying. The second volume was professionally
produced by Wandering Minstrel Studio (tape WMS9202), address from j-card
3220 Watt AV #C38, Sacramento CA 95821. Also available from this source is
"Wondering Minstrel", by "that great tall oaf" Valadonis the Wanderer, which
includes several traditional items often heard around SCA listening circles
in addition to some of his own compostions which are aurally-compatible.
(Apologies in advance to all: I *think* the address given is out-of-date,
but I don't have my address book immediate to hand.
ESTRIL SWET, please update us on current contact info for Valadonis!)
Ioseph of Locksley (mka Joe Bethancourt) has a number of tapes with
traditional and SCA-specific material, including most recently a
collaborative effort with Leslie the Bard (mka Leslie Fish): _Serious Steel_
This collection includes the recently cited "Aten Man", "The Cripple's
Shield Wall", the title song (Leslie's take on what would happen if the
world fell apart during Pennsic), "Serious Steal" (Ioseph's filk of the same
tune but with a very different premise at Estrella), "Valhalla", and other
good stuff. While not necessarily "learning" in focus, _Serious Steel_
presents some very fine work by two of the most widely recognized bardic
names in the SCA.
I also suggest Ioseph's work on _Celtic Circle Dance_ as a source for those
seeking a little variation on some standards, as well as some very nice
combinations of instruments one might not expect (the rendition of "Hunt the
Wren" included here has seven instruments, all played by Ioseph - an
advantage of modern studio work!).
