Mikal:

Having seen Tangwystl's commentary, I think I may have pegged what made it
dificult for me to offer constructive criticism of "THE SONG OF MANY
SAILINGS": the form is tantalizingly almost-familiar, and I don't know what
to make comparisons to.

I feel that I identified one critical component of the format, the
(near-)repetition of the last half of the first line in each stanza in the
first half of the last line, that Tangwystl did not appear to register. The
three-stanzas-and-chorus flow that appears in the early portion does not
continue throughout, so I am not sure about the context for making any
comments based upon the recurring "return from battle / get back home *if*"
structure...

I must agree that I would probably understand the whole better to hear at
least a portion recited / chanted / sung. Probably *have* heard the form
somewhere along the way, and it just isn't registering. (Heck, I've written
things twice as long as this and at least as blood-dreched without any
particular attention to a known, traditional, structure -- and been told
later that I had created a fine example of an old style. To quote the
Warners: "Go fig")
