Well if you're just looking for opinions which every one has, just
like... well, that's not important now.
Anyway, I've never liked filk. Or rather, I've never liked about 95%
of filk. It's just too easy to take someone else's workg and substitute in
silly words, and I've never felt that it deserves full credit as creating a
piece. I like a joke as much as the next person (in fact, more than most)
but unless you're a comedian you don't make a "career" out of jokes, as some
people have done with their filk songs. BTW, no hate mail please. If you
want to call me names for this then do it here where everyone can find out
what I am <g>.
I've never been much of a song writer, I play other people's
material or historical and public domain stuff.
I've always enjoyed performing original material (especially
material by people I know), whether about the SCA or historical songs, and
but I only play other people's material if they aren't actively performing
it themselves. I have friends whose songs I've played and then had to put
down because they've begun playing them again after a lapse. I consider it a
courtesy to the artist who created the piece.
As time goes by I've gravitated more towards period music, but there
should always be a place around the campfire or the bardic circle for
original stuff - whether on historical subjects or the stories of the SCA.
Enjoy,
Brian
