For the post regarding existing examples of medieval
instruments-
There is a book I found in the music library of University of
Virginia that may help.
It is entitled Extant Medieval Musical Instruments:
A Provisional Catalogue by Types
by Frederick Crane
University of Iowa Press
1972
ISBN 87745-022-6
It lists many examples and documents where they were found and
where they are now.
There are a few drawings of some of the instruments but no
pictures.
A little digging in a large music library will yield many
pictures of extant instruments!
Hope this helps.
