The Indian game of Chaupad / Pachisi seems to have a long history of
being played on cloth mats, but that specific game does not seem to have
made it to Europe until well after the 1600 date being discussed.

The Chinese have been printing Game Boards on paper -- Chess in
particular.
But I do not how long this has been done.
