This is a common technique...
The commercially trademarked game "Chutes and Ladders" is based on the
medieval game "Snakes and Ladders"
The commercially trademarked game "Snakeeye" is based on the
medieval game "Shut the Box"
The commercially trademarked game "Stratego" is based on the
medieval game "Jungle Game"
etc. etc. etc.
She's taken it one step further and didn't even start with a medieval game
but game a modern game a fantasy flavor (I refuse to call it medieval)
I'd say go for it! It doesn't take much to avoid trademark as exampled
above.
