What you need to do is check into other Viking art.  How did they make 
the figureheads on their ships and the knotwork on their rope beds.
At a guess, I'd say you'd be able to find documentation for all those
techniques, burning, carving and painting.  Not every board was made the
same way, they did whatever was convienent at the time or that they 
could do best.
