hist-games: How did vikings play chess?

Hi Tor, hi all

I don't have anything to suggest that the Vikings had a special set of
rules, so I assume that they played it as the rest of northwestern Europe
played it around that time. So that would certainly have been without the
present 'queen' and the other rule changes that occurred later.

Murray gives rules of a number of medieval European versions of chess, one
of them is called 'Icelandic chess'. I can't remember at the moment where
and when that was played, but I'll try and find out and post anything of
relevance to this.

Cheers, Lex
