Reversi is apparently late 19th century, for whatever it's worth.
My 1961 "Goren's Hoyle" has the following introduction to the section
describing the game:
"Reversi was published in London about 1888, and a series of articles
on its strategy, probably by its inventor, Lewis Waterman, was published
in _The Queen_, a periodical devoted to "the affairs of interest to ladies."
One gathers that the _fin de siecle_ ladies were more mathematically-
minded than their descendants."
