  Greetings "Mindspring",

  If you are interested in historical adjuncts for ales as a replacement for 
hops which
reportedly might supplement or enhance the alcohol, I'd suggest the addition 
of wormwood
or mugwort. What you appear to have in mind might be better put in a pipe 
and
smoked concurrent with drinking the ale.
