The Private Brewer's Guide of 1822 mentions Spanish Juice in several Porter 
recipes.  
What is this? Some form of caramel or concentrated molasses?
Also, what are Hartshorn Shavings?

The book contains listings of many fines and penalties for public and 
commercial brewers using adjuncts but then indicates the free use of sugar, 
molasses, and other odd ingredients for private or homebrewers.
