Try another brand of airlock. The airlock should make a bubbling noise. Or 
Run a hose into a pail filled with water with bleach added at 1 TBS to the 
gal ratio. The hose should be the diameter of the opening of your carboy. As 
long as the hose end is submerged, nothing will get in. We clamp it to the 
side.

Use nonreactive pail plastic or the like.
