hist-brewing: Sumac Ale?

Anybody out there ever hear of using the berries from Staghorn Sumac as a
gruit-like agent in ale? It's a common herb in middle-eastern cooking, known
all over Europe, and has been used for "Indian Lemonade" in this country.
I've seen a recipe for its use in wine but have been surprised by its
absence as an ingredient in ales or beers. Considering all of the goofy
stuff people have brewed with, it seems like someone must have used it...
