Now that has me thinking. Is the shell porous enough to allow air in or
does the eggy part get denser? There's a few more but I'll leave it at
that. Anyone who has an answer can reply personally, as we are getting a
little off topic.

Chickens tend to be our major/sole source of eggs nowadays, but not so in
pre-industrial times. Pheasant, quail and other eggs were scavenged up and
sold at market so a reference to "a small egg" or especially "the smallest
egg" can most assuredly be something smaller than a chickens.
