hist-brewing: hydrometers

Acting on the same principal as the egg, I know that small (hollow) glass
balls of varying sizes were used in the 1700s (and probably earlier, but
the ones I've seen were from around the early to  mid 1700s) .  I believe
they were used primarily for determining alcohol for tax purposes.
