Yeah, they do.  Somewhere recently I saw a photo.  They had a blast burner
the size of a small jet engine blowing flames eight feet long through a
horizontally mounted cask.

I believe Jack Daniel's is still selling chipped-up old barrels as smoking
chips.  Many pieces have a charred side, if you'd care to look.
