hist-brewing: Historical "non-sanitization"--any experience?

Hi.  Someone mentioned using unslaked lime & water to sterilize a cask.
Just a reminder - this reaction is strongly exothermic & may start a fire.
Hmm... maybe *that's* where the charred whisky barrels come from? ;-)
