hist-brewing: to Malt or Not To Malt..

ps.  i found a recipe for a 1086 beer that used mostly oats..

16.5 % barley
16.5 % wheat
67 % Oats!!!

so it seems unlikely that the oats would have been unmalted? maybe? can
you get enough fermentables out of unmalted oat to make beer?
