By the 1750s, the period of "London and Country Brewer", coal-fired
kilning was the method of choice, according to "London and Country Brewer"
a book in its seventh edition by 1759. Less desirable than that that was
straw-fired, wood was the last choice, only wanted if you specifically
were looking for that type of malt. The "Pale Ale" book of the Classic
Styles series may be the most inaccurate of the series, unfortunately.
