Go to the very front of the book (like the 4th page or something), and it is
explained thusly...
_._ Stands for a strain playd once.
_:_ Stands for a strain playd twice.
_.:_ Stands for a strain playd thrice, &c.
Basically it's a reference to the repeat structure of the music relative to the
dance steps.
