DescriptionAbout us: The Draconis Expanse, founded in 2006, is a community established to provide a healthy and fun atmosphere for creative writing and role-playing based on the world of Star Trek for people from all over the world. Back Story: The Draconis Expanse is an area of space located beyond the edge of the Federation, about 300 light years from Earth towards the Galactic Core. It is filled with an unusually high concentration of stars, nebulae and other stellar phenomena which make navigation and unmanned exploration difficult, leaving much of the expanse virtually unexplored. The Expanse is so named because it is, from Earth, inside the constellation Draco and also because it is home to a large nebula noted by Cellerian Astronomers. From the Cellerian home-system the shape of the nebula is suggestive, to Terrans, of an oriental dragon. Located on the edge of this fiery expanse are several star systems under the control of a little known and observed race known as the Cellerians. The Cellerians are unusual in that they are a descended from plants, not animals and also possess, even by Federation Standards, an advanced level of technological sophistication in both botany and pharmacology. Having developed warp drive late in the 21st century they have been tentatively exploring their surroundings and establishing trade and political relations with several Federation worlds, including Cait. Having observed the workings of the Federation for some time, and acknowledging the scientific, cultural and economic benefits that such an alliance could bring they have petitioned for membership and invited the Federation to use their system as base of operations. To this end, the Federation has created an administrative unit for the establishment and operation of a base and a number of ships within Cellerian space and the Draconis Expanse. The initial member of this unit was the USS Tian An Men, a refitted Miranda Class cruiser. Though antiquated, she is a fine vessel in excellent condition, staffed with the best and brightest available for this important diplomatic mission. Her Captain, Theodore Draigon, has a distinguished career in command and diplomacy. The Cellerian contribution to their crew is their ambassador, Kr'atall Drahl'U, an experienced and educated member of their military. Due to the nature of the Expanse the Federation has never truly explored this region of space with the exception of a few unmanned probes and small scale reconnaissance missions to the areas closest to the Federation. The mission of the USS Tian an Men, and the other vessels which will follow in her footsteps will be to protect the Cellerian people and their assets, to seek out new life and new civilizations and most challenging of all, explore this dangerous and elusive area of space to finally reveal it's age old secrets and it's dark and hidden past. |
